RLUK21 Conference – lightning talks call for submissions

RLUK21 Conference – lightning talks call for submissions

Deadline: Friday 11 December

The RLUK Conference will return as a virtual event on 17-19 March 2021, and the theme will focus on the transformational power of the research library – the full programme will be published early in the new year.

We have issued a call for submissions for lightning talks on practical responses or activities that have been implemented by libraries as a result of Covid-19. Proposals might demonstrate innovations, best practice, successes and failures, lessons learnt, and short and long-term impacts of the pandemic on our libraries.

RLUK21 lightning talks will be a maximum of 10 minutes in length. There will be no other restrictions in terms of the presentation – you may choose to use slides, video or conduct a live or pre-recorded demonstration. Live/pre-recorded demonstrations might include short tours of buildings or spaces, or onsite illustrations of a new service or initiative. The deadline for this call is Friday 11 December, and submissions can be made via the RLUK Conference website.

DCDC21 Conference – call for papers

Deadline: 22 January 2021

The DCDC21 Conference is inviting submissions to its call for papers: Catalysts for change: transforming our practices, collections, and communities through times of crisis. The deadline to submit to the call for papers has been extended to 22 January 2021.

DCDC stands for Discovering Collections, Discovering Communities. It is a cross-sectoral conference, hosted by The National ArchivesRLUK and Jisc, that will bring together colleagues from the GLAMA sectors (galleries, libraries, archives, museums and academia) for a week-long event (28 June - 2 July 2021) to explore how crisis can act as a catalyst for change for collections, and within our cultural organisations.

The conference will examine the impact that crisis can have on working practices, collections, and audience engagement, and consider how cultural heritage organisations can look beyond times of crisis to foster innovation and collaboration in their institutions and communities.

Proposals are welcome on the theme of ‘catalysts for change’ on any project or initiative involving archives, libraries, museums and other heritage and cultural organisations in partnership with each other, with communities and the academic sector.

Due to the current situation with Covid-19, the deadline for submissions to the call for papers has been extended to 22 January 2021. The full call for papers can be read on the DCDC website.

Gentle reminder - Free IRRT webinar-Reaching national impact in Kenya and Namibia

Reaching national impact in Kenya and Namibia: EIFL’s strategy for public library development
Using a combination of key partnerships, an extensive capacity-building programme, and a network of public libraries, EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) and its national partners – The Kenya National Library Service (knls) and the Namibia Library and Archives Service (NLAS) developed a sustainable in-house continuous professional development program for public librarians. Already over 650 librarians have received training from expert local trainers. EIFL is looking to expand and adapt this program to other EIFL partner countries in Africa, where public libraries have been or are being equipped with public access computers and the internet. In the session we will review EIFL’s approach and plans for the future, and you will hear from local librarians about the impact of the program. Strengthening continuous professional development of public libraries in Kenya and Namibia is part of EIFL’s broader capacity building initiative for public librarians in Africa. Call for Proposals for Presentation at the 2021 ALA IRRT Pre-Conference

Call for Proposals for Presentation at the 2021 ALA IRRT Pre-Conference

The American Library Association (ALA) International Relations Round Table (IRRT) invites you to submit presentation proposals for their 2021 pre-conference in Chicago, IL, date to be determined. If the conference is not held as an in-person event, the presentations will be in a virtual format.

The theme for this year’s pre-conference is Relevance and Effectiveness of Libraries in a Changing World. From the COVID-19 pandemic to issues of social justice to social media influences, libraries continue to face challenges in a rapidly changing world. The IFLA Section for Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning (CPDWL) recognized the need for developing the skills and expertise for a rapidly changing world at its 2019 satellite conference.

Considering these influences, the 2021 ALA IRRT Pre-Conference will include presentations that address opportunities for and examples of libraries’ effectiveness and relevance in a changing world. The following broad topics to be considered are:

  1. Libraries Adapting to the COVID World
  2. Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice
  3. Social Media Transforming Libraries
  4. Library Transformation through Technology

  5.  The Development of Digital Libraries

To submit a proposal, send an email with your attached proposal to co-chairs Gloria Creed-Dikeogu (gloria.creeddikeogu@ottawa.edu) and Barbara Marson (marsonb@ecu.edu) by end-of-business on February 5, 2021.

Monday, Nov 16 Online-Seminar 'Why do libraries need buildings?

Dear colleagues,

we invite you to participate at the online German-Dutch dialogue on the future of libraries.
The series will start with the topic: Library Buildings - Why do Libraries need Buildings?

The rapid propagation of digital services from libraries might lead to the conclusion that libraries are moving more and more into immaterial spheres. So, what is the reason that libraries are newly built or modernised for sometimes considerably high amounts of money? Questions like this will be discussed in our webinar by two experts in library buildings and in library politics.

Speakers:

  • Theo Kemperman (Public Library Rotterdam)
  • Olaf Eigenbrodt ( State and Univ. Library Hamburg)

Moderator:

  • Barbara Lison, Public Library Bremen; IFLA president-elect

Date:

Monday, 16 November 2020; 11:00 - 12:00 (CET)

Registration is required; the online seminar is free of charge and in English: https://eur-nl.libcal.com/event/3501120

The series will continue every month on a different topic which is currently of interest to library developments. Subjects being discussed will come from all areas of the library landscape, like artificial intelligence, sustainability in libraries, UX design, library staff recruitment.

We are looking forward to your participation!

Kind regards,

Hella
