Law Librarians Monitoring Legal Responses to COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean

Happy holidays everyone. I wanted to take this opportunity to share with all

of you our project called Law Librarians Monitoring COVID-19 in Latin America
and the Caribbean. Our project began back in March 2020 and we initially
produced 7 biweekly interviews covering subsections of the region as well as
identifying top sources for these countries. Since July, librarians from all
parts of the Americas (Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Paraguay,
Trinidad and Tobago, Martinique, Canada, etc.) have produced reports in
specific situations in these countries. So far we have 22 reports and I’m
thrilled to inform you that we are expecting to have a total of 40 reports by
March 2021, including reports on how the situation looks like from the US,
Canada and international organizations in the region.

Recently, HeinOnline chose our project to be one of their librarian-curated
additional resources part of their newly released COVID-19 Database. Once you
click on additional resources, you have to select the Librarian-Curated tab
and you will see our project listed there:
https://libguides.heinonline.org/covid-19/additional-resources. We have also
published and presented and will continue to do so in the coming year.

Visit our website and subscribe: https://lawlibrariansmonitoringcovid19.com/

Please use, share and keep in mind our project, if it helps in any way.

Announcing The New Shape of Sharing Online Series

The New Shape of Sharing:
Networks, Expertise, Information

An online forum on European librarianship

January 11 - April 19, 2021

The New Shape of Sharing: Networks, Expertise, Information continues conversations begun at the New Direction Symposium held in Frankfurt in 2017. This multi-day working forum, sponsored by the Collaborative Initiative for French Language Collections (CIFNAL), the German-North American Resources Partnership (GNARP)—both working projects of the Center for Research Libraries (Chicago, USA)—was originally scheduled to be hosted by Casalini Libri on May 11-14, 2020 in Fiesole, Italy. The in-person event was postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

We hope this online series on key issues facing Western European collections and public services will encourage debate and surface new ideas. The sessions will focus on three areas: new models for collaborative collection development and services; the growing range of content and format types and their significance for libraries and researchers; and the evolving role of libraries and librarians in the research process.

The multiple effects of the pandemic on libraries and academic institutions clearly demonstrate that the topics chosen for the forum—cooperation and sharing of collections, services, and technology among libraries, scholars, and members of the book and publishing communities—are particularly pertinent in today’s library environment. The planning committee believes that these discussions are too important to wait until we are able to meet in person, so we have transitioned the forum to a series of online presentations. We hope you can join us!

The New Shape of Sharing Online Series will take place on the following Mondays beginning in January 2021 but registration is required. It is free and open to all.

Save the date (14 Jan) for Webinar “Library Map of the World: Engagement for Advocacy”

Dear colleagues,

The Library Map of the World website is a source of country-level library statistics, information about the library environment in each country, and a unifying platform providing access to SDG stories. IFLA Library Map of the World (LMW), is an initiative to ensure the availability of data, information and stories that show the powerful contribution of libraries in supporting smarter and more inclusive societies. This is the key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  How library associations can use this material from the LMW Website for their work and how they can contribute to make their work more visible will be discussed in this online seminar, organized by IFLA Management of Library Associations Section and IFLA Headquarters.

Join Halo Locher, Chair of the Management of Library Associations Section, Kristine Paberza-Ramiresa, IFLA’s Member Engagement Officer, and Stephen Wyber, IFLA’s Policy and Advocacy Manager, as they will discuss:

  • The importance of being well presented on the Library Map of the World
  • Engagement scenarios for library associations
  • Processes behind keeping the LMW data up to date, preparing and curating country profiles

Upcoming IFLA Webinar - "Librarians supporting universal broadband to continue providing essential services to communities everywhere"

IFLA Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Section (CPDWL) and New Professionals Special Interest Group (NPSIG) and ALA welcomes you to participate in an upcoming webinar: "Librarians supporting universal broadband to continue providing essential services to communities everywhere"

Date/Time: December 14, Monday - 10:00am ET USA | 4:00 pm Sweden, 8:30 pm India

Summary: IFLA has championed the UN's Sustainable Development Goals for a long time. The Internet Governance Forum has called attention to the Internet as a vehicle for human resilience and solidarity. They have stated that inclusion achieved by access to the Internet is a key contributor towards a stronger economy and enhanced economic development through shared wealth, shared employment, and equal opportunity for all, and is an enabler towards the fulfillment of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. UNESCO has indicated that broadband is "the missing link" in global access to education. COVID-19 propelled a massive shift to digital which made evident the reality of inequality of access to the Internet which also plays into the mission and operation of libraries. As per the ALA, broadband in libraries is needed by patrons to access devices, collections and information, and a myriad of services. It is also used by librarians to create and develop content accessed by patrons and provide access to transformative resources to better the education and lifelong learning of communities deeply impacted by COVID-19 in all regions of the world.

Join us and hear from library leaders from IFLA, UNESCO MIL, and libraries in different regions share considerations on how to move forward towards this urgent goal.

Moderated by Loida Garcia-Febo, CPDWL Consultant, International Library Consultant

Speakers:

Dr. Jesus Lau
Co-Chair UNESCO Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL)

Catharina Isberg
Library Director Helsingborg City Libraries, IFLA Governing Board Member

Sanjay Kumar Bihani

Library and Information Officer, Ministry of External Affairs, Patiala House Annexe, Tilak Marg, New Delhi, India and IFLA Governing Board Member

About the International Summit of the Book

The “International Summit of the Book” is a US Library of Congress initiative. The Summit discusses the development of books into electronic formats and its impact on reading; the challenges facing books and the publishing industry and the role of books and reading in societies. The Summit also discusses key issues on technology and manuscripts, including the role of translation in the preservation and transmission of culture, and books as an important tool in cultural exchange.  In previous years, the Summit has been held across a number of continents in cities that have a global cultural impact in countries such as the United States, Singapore, France, Egypt, Ireland, Romania and Azerbaijan.

Amalgamation of International Summit of the Book with WBIMLC 2020.

This year, the International Summit of the Book will be held in conjunction with the Western Balkan Information and Media Literacy Conference (WBIMLC). Owing to unprecedented challenges encountered with Covid 19, we have decided to amalgamate these two important conferences for just this one year.

We want to ensure that these two important and far- reaching events take place in 2020  despite this dreadful worldwide pandemic.  We are fighting to keep the International Summit of the Book, now in its 9th year, alive and thriving despite recent trials and tribulations in Beirut, Lebanon last year when the Summit unfortunately could not take place owing to the political situation in Lebanon at that time.

We also want to continue the momentum and tradition of holding our fantastic Information and Media Literacy conference in Bihać, Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of the few International Library or Information Literacy conferences that will take place in 2020.  As we all know 2020 is different, unprecedented many would say.

So we are going to do it differently, Online will be the main expression of these conferences and both the Summit and WBIMLC 2020 will be held virtually for the first time. But we invite also people who would like to travel to Bihać (if safe to do so) to join host guests and speakers in Bihać, on the banks of the beautiful River Una.

We hope you can join us in Bihać, for these momentous and historic events in what will be an unforgettable year for the library community and all humanity.
