Reaching national impact in Kenya and Namibia: EIFL’s strategy for public library development

Description

Using a combination of key partnerships, an extensive capacity-building programme, and a network of public libraries, EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) and its national partners – The Kenya National Library Service (knls) and the Namibia Library and Archives Service (NLAS) developed a sustainable in-house continuous professional development program for public librarians. Already over 650 librarians have received training from expert local trainers. EIFL is looking to expand and adapt this program to other EIFL partner countries in Africa, where public libraries have been or are being equipped with public access computers and the internet. In the session we will review EIFL’s approach and plans for the future, and you will hear from local librarians about the impact of the program. Strengthening continuous professional development of public libraries in Kenya and Namibia is part of EIFL’s broader capacity building initiative for public librarians in Africa. Call for Proposals for Presentation at the 2021 ALA IRRT Pre-Conference

 Call for Proposals for Presentation at the 2021 ALA IRRT Pre-Conference

The American Library Association (ALA) International Relations Round Table (IRRT) invites you to submit presentation proposals for their 2021 pre-conference in Chicago, IL, date to be determined. If the conference is not held as an in-person event, the presentations will be in a virtual format.

The theme for this year’s pre-conference is Relevance and Effectiveness of Libraries in a Changing World. From the COVID-19 pandemic to issues of social justice to social media influences, libraries continue to face challenges in a rapidly changing world. The IFLA Section for Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning (CPDWL) recognized the need for developing the skills and expertise for a rapidly changing world at its 2019 satellite conference. 

Considering these influences, the 2021 ALA IRRT Pre-Conference will include presentations that address opportunities for and examples of libraries’ effectiveness and relevance in a changing world. The following broad topics to be considered are:

1. Libraries Adapting to the COVID World
2. Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice
3. Social Media Transforming Libraries
4. Library Transformation through Technology

  5.  The Development of Digital Libraries

To submit a proposal, send an email with your attached proposal to co-chairs Gloria Creed-Dikeogu (gloria.creeddikeogu@ottawa.edu) and Barbara Marson (marsonb@ecu.edu) by end-of-business on February 5, 2021.

The rapid propagation of digital services from libraries might lead to the conclusion that libraries are moving more and more into immaterial spheres. So, what is the reason that libraries are newly built or modernised for sometimes considerably high amounts of money? Questions like this will be discussed in our webinar by two experts in library buildings and in library politics.
