Description:

The COVID-19 pandemic remains an ongoing threat that has led, not only to the uprooting of local and global social, economic, and health conditions, but also to the disruption of the cultural production sector. Europe has not been immune to the challenges that have been ushered in by the pandemic. Many European libraries, being at the forefront of knowledge creation and preservation, have stepped up their support of researchers and scholars in unprecedented ways. Notwithstanding, the shifts in the landscape of collection development are and will profoundly impact the services that libraries can provide.  

This virtual panel is the inaugural event in a planned six-part bi-monthly webinar series, “Collecting Conversations: Academic Libraries and Research in Flux,” that is dedicated to various aspects of librarianship.  These activities that will include both national and international librarians, archivists, scholars, administrators, and vendors from all parts of the world.

In this panel, European librarians, who are specialists in Central, Eastern, and Southeast European Studies, and Slavic/Slavonic Studies, will share experiences and perspectives about their individual and institutional challenges, and opportunities in areas of research, instruction, and collection development. 

Panelists:

·       Ms. Mel Bach is the Slavonic Specialist and also Head of Collections and Academic Liaison at Cambridge University Library, UK.

·       Mr. Olaf Hamann is the Head of the Eastern-European Branch of the Berlin State Library, Germany.

·       Dr. Katya Rogatchevskaia is the Lead Curator of East European Collections at the British Library, UK, and the Chair of the Council for Slavonic and East European Library and Information Services.

·       Dr. Gudrun Wirtz is the Head of the Department of Eastern Europe at the Bavarian State Library, Germany.

Organizer/ Moderator: Dr. Liladhar R. Pendse is Librarian for the Eastern European and Eurasian Studies Collection and the Caribbean and Latin American Studies Collections at UC Berkeley Library, USA and the Institute for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies.

Co-Moderator: Ms. Anna Rakityanskaya is Curator for Russian and Belarusian Collections at the Widener Library at Harvard University.

The panel presentation will be recorded but the question and answer session will not be recorded.

The International Relations Round Table (IRRT) Pre-Conference originally scheduled during ALA"s Annual Conference was cancelled due COVID-19. However, we are excited to announce that the three speakers originally selected for the pre-conference have agreed to present virtually. Committee co-chairs Drs. Gloria Creed-Dikeogu and Barbara Marson are hosting three webinars this summer as a series with the theme of Libraries as Social Change Agents.

Each webinar will last approximately 1 ½ hours – one hour for the speaker and 30 minutes for Q & A.

Save the date for Occupy Library 2020, 22-25th of September

Dear IFLA colleagues,

As you might have heard, we have been planning for a formative/funky/fab conference to bring together the innovative ideas that are implemented in libraries in the Central, Eastern European, Black Sea, Caucasus, and Caspian regions. We moved online, and we are excited to invite you to join us for Occupy Library 2020 Online, on September 22 - 25. And it is free-of-charge!

Our call for proposals is open until 1st of August, and we are looking for presentations of case studies and ignite talks on the following topics:

• Serving communities in time of crisis
• Partnerships for strong democracies  
• Active citizenship in analog and digital format
• Emerging tech trends to empower communities
• Public spaces and community engagement

We also welcome proposals for open-themed interactive sessions, to cover other topics relevant to libraries and NGOs. 2020 Best Practices from World Libraries photo gallery

The IRRT International Connections Committee has just released its 2020 Best Practices from World Libraries Photo Gallery website. 

Check out the thirty-six projects that were selected for inclusion, focusing on this year's theme of The Value of Libraries in Promoting Social Justice and Inclusion. 

This collection of photographs, curated by the International Connections Committee, was chosen because they “best illustrate libraries’ innovative services and impact in building strong communities around the world. These images demonstrate ALA’s core values of librarianship in promoting democracy, diversity, social responsibility, lifelong learning and professionalism.”

REALM study reveals initial findings of Coronavirus on library materials

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has released findings from the first phase of a project to develop and disseminate science-based information about how materials can be handled to mitigate exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19. 

Scientists have found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is not detectable on five common library materials after three days: hardcover book covers (buckram cloth), the cover of softcover books, plain paper pages inside a closed book, mylar protective book cover jackets, and plastic DVD cases. More results will be released in July.
