National Library of the Philippines Conference Oct. 13-15

The National Library of the Philippines is sponsoring a National Conference of Children’s Librarians on October 13-15, 2014 in Tagaytay City, Cavite, Philippines.

They are looking for a speaker on one or more of the following topics for plenary sessions:

You need to pay your own way to Manila.  They will pay for your interisland transport, two nights lodging around your presentation, food and “other hospitalities.   You might be able to negotiate more.   No honorarium.

This spring IRRT moved to a Drupal based appointment process. This vastly improves the appointment process. Thank you for your persistence in working with us through this migration!

How to use the IRRT Volunteer Form

About the Form

People interested in serving on an IRRT committee must now complete a special online form. The online volunteer form collects information about your background, the kind of work you would like to do, and the names of groups to which you would like an appointment.

Accessing the Form

• Go to the ALA web site (www.ala.org)

• Click on "Log In" in the upper right hand corner of the home page. Enter your ALA login and password. Please Note: you cannot access the form if your ALA membership is not current.

• Next, go to the Committee Volunteer form at:

[Note: If you did not log in at ala.org, you'll first be taken to the generic ALA login screen before you can proceed to the Committee Volunteer Form.]

Completing the Form

• On the welcome screen will be a dropdown box. Make sure that you click on the box to open the dropdown menu.  Click on IRRT. Then click CONTINUE.

• Clicking CONTINUE gets you to the first page of the form. Fill out as much information as you can. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page.

• At the bottom of the first page is another selector drop down for locating the groups for which you want to volunteer. First select IRRT, then click CONTINUE. You will now see a listing of all IRRT Committees.

• Remember that you can have up to 3 ALA appointments a year.

• Select from 1 to 3 IRRT committees. After making your selections, click CONTINUE to access a review page to verify your selections

•         Clicking SUBMIT on the review page enters your form in the database and creates a final receipt page which details your volunteer requests through the most current session. You may want to print this page for your records.

        If this works, John Hickok, 2014-2015 IRRT Chair-Elect can then go online to review your committee requests and to verify that there is an opening on the committee(s) you have selected. Later you will receive an email message inviting you to accept a specific appointment!

If you want a Committee Appointment. Part I

Thank you for considering an appointment—or a reappointment—to an IRRT Committee! Most of the work of IRRT is handled through a dozen committees. They are involved with planning programs at the ALA Annual Conference such as the international posters session, the international papers program, the Chair’s program, the international pre-conference, and the international orientation. They organize the on-site mentoring program and international visitors’ center as well as the international reception. They manage the IRRT awards and publications and help provide guidance on how to establish and continue Sister Libraries arrangements.

You might know which committee you would like to work with. Even so, it is a good idea to find out the committee’s charge and duties of its officers and members.

Grants for Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries

The next round of grants for innovative libraries in developing countries from the Elsevier Foundation is now open to support the efforts of libraries to enhance the quality of life in developing countries by advancing knowledge in science, the social sciences technology and medicine. The Foundation provides one, two and three year grants to libraries in the developing countries and supporting organizations to help fund:

• Programs to enhance library infrastructure, technology or information services in ways that significantly expand their ability to make STM (scientific/social sciences, technical and medical) information available to those who need it — researchers, clinicians, students, policymakers and the wider public
• Programs that expand library information resources in the developing world through digitization or preservation of information that advances science, health, the environment, and indigenous knowledge.
• Training and education programs for library staff, students or researchers, contributing to sustainable improvements in the library’s capacity to provide STM information in the developing world.
• Partnerships between libraries in the developing countries and institutions in the developed countries to provide technical assistance or training. Developed country partner organizations include libraries, learned societies, universities, intergovernmental organizations and other non-profit organizations.

Please note that in 2012 a new two step application process has been implemented to streamline the submission and review process. First round applications will be accepted through June 24th through the Foundation’s online application system. In early July shortlisted candidates will be announced and invited to submit a full proposal in the second round. Grant recipients will be announced in December 2012. IRRT 60th Anniversary Endowment Campaign

Celebrating 60 Years of Service
Over the years the International Relations Round Table has provided opportunity for countless numbers of librarians to participate in global advancement of the profession. Round Table programs and receptions have been highlights of the association’s annual meetings. ALA membership at large has benefited from contact at conferences with colleagues from every corner of the world. Many international librarians’ first encounter with American library practice has been through the work of IRRT. Over the sixty years of its existence IRRT has fostered opportunities for U.S. librarians to visit libraries in other countries and to work overseas in exchange and other programs. It has facilitated the donation of books to needy institutions abroad and provided professional expertise to libraries on every continent. To maintain and expand these important activities resources from an ongoing fund are essential.

Endowment Campaign Donations2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the American Library Association's International Relations Round Table (IRRT). To celebrate the richness of relationships developed over the years between U.S. librarians and their colleagues abroad, and to provide a foundation for continued contribution by the Round Table to ALA's important role in international librarianship, the IRRT leadership is embarking on a Sixty campaign to create an IRRT endowment.In keeping with the campaign theme, we suggest a donation of $60, $600, or whatever amount you feel would be appropriate.

Lubuto Library Project Talk in Washington DC

To bring literacy and hope to Africa’s vulnerable children, Jane Kinney Meyers founded the Lubuto Library Project. Meyers will discuss the goals and accomplishments of the project at the Library of Congress at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 3 in the Pickford Theater, located on the third floor of the James Madison Building at 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C. The lecture, sponsored by the African Section of the Library’s African and Middle Eastern Division, is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
