In 2015, 150 world leaders, with support from the United Nations Development Programme, adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to fight against injustice, poverty, inequality, and climate change. This program will address how we, as librarians and libraries, can take action to better the lives of all people and protect our planet.

The Chair's Program Committee seeks proposals from speakers who will be part of a panel that will describe and share the following:

  2. How individuals, libraries, or library associations are working with their governments, communities, and/or partners to advance peace and justice, alleviate poverty and hunger, reduce inequality, increase women’s rights and political participation, or protect the environment.

Examples of topics (presentations are NOT limited to these topics; creativity is welcomed and encouraged):

          Promotion of sustainability either through practice or community outreach
          Providing programming or services promoting gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls
          Providing programming or services that encourage political participation from historically underrepresented groups

          Promoting policies or practices that support sustainable long-term management of natural resources on land or water
          Taking action on climate change
          Creating partnerships, programming or services that promote education, literacy, basic human rights and quality of life
          Providing programming and services, or promoting policies and practices, to those within the justice system. For example, promoting government transparency and accountability, including the reduction of corruption, violence in society, and the enforcement of laws.

International librarians, library administrators, and library partners are especially encouraged to submit proposals.

Policy and Research Officer opening at IFLA Headquarters

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is looking for a new Policy and Research Officer to work on Internet governance and digital issues.
The Internet plays an indispensable role in achieving key library objectives – access to information, freedom of expression, individual empowerment. But for it to do so, risks must be managed. The open architecture of the Internet is challenged by both public and private actors. Individuals face threats to their privacy from companies and governments.
Visit www.ifla.org/node/11190 for more information on key areas of responsibilities, and instructions on submitting an application. The closing date is 27 February 2017. IFLA advises interested candidates to submit their applications as soon as possible due to an expected high volume of applications.

PLA forms new task force on equity, diversity and inclusion

CHICAGO — On Saturday, Jan. 21, at the 2017 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Atlanta, the Public Library Association (PLA) Board approved the creation of a PLA Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Co-chaired by Richard Kong, director, Skokie (Illinois) Public Library and Amita Lonial, principal librarian, San Diego (California) County Library, the task force has been charged with developing a strategic and coordinated approach for PLA related to issues of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). The task force will explore methods and consider resources to be developed that will allow PLA to take a multifaceted approach. Task force activities include but are not limited to: making recommendations for how EDI content is integrated into PLA programs; elevating successful libraries as models to generate and share best practices; identifying ways PLA might influence equity and inclusion within public libraries; and helping libraries serve diverse communities and staff.
“The current political and social climate is shining a harsh light on just how much we fall short of a truly equitable, diverse, and inclusive profession and society,” said Kong. “It is imperative that we take an honest look at this reality and take concrete steps to bring long-lasting, meaningful changes that will advance equity, diversity and inclusion in both our profession and the communities we serve.”

Lonial added, “Public libraries have a legacy of embracing and advancing social justice. Recent events have libraries asking what that looks like in this political moment and how we can more authentically engage our core values of equity, diversity and inclusion. Our hope is that the task force can help to facilitate that dialogue and provide concrete tools and resources for public libraries of all types and sizes to participate and go deeper.”

Public libraries have a unique and unparalleled ability to bring people and knowledge together. PLA is committed to its core values of openness and inclusiveness and supports the recent statement from the American Library Association (ALA), opposing the new administration’s policies that contradict core library values. The PLA Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will work to strengthen the organization’s commitment to its core values, while ensuring issues of EDI remain a top priority.
The task force will report to the PLA Board of Directors at least twice per year. After two years, the board will review the work of the task force and recommend continuation, sunsetting, or creation of a standing committee. The task force will meet at the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago (Illinois) and work virtually beforehand. Appointments are currently being finalized.

For more information, contact the PLA office at (800) 545-2433, ext. 5PLA.

IFLA issues invitation to submit funding proposals for International Advocacy Programme

As part of the International Advocacy Programme (IAP), IFLA is launching a call for proposals to request funding to implement regional or national awareness-raising and capacity building activities in 2017 and 2018.
The activities planned should show how libraries contribute to the UN 2030 Agenda, and encourage governments to recognize libraries as partners to achieve the 17 SDGs by including them in National Development Plans.

These activities involve, for example:
* Bringing together a smaller number of associations in the region to form alliances or partnerships in pursuit of SDG advocacy;
* Development of materials and events e.g. in conjunction with conferences and in-country meetings to support awareness-raising around the UN 2030 Agenda;
* Awareness raising and capacity building workshops for relevant stakeholders that focus on implementing the UN 2030 Agenda at the regional level as well as specific country issues and positions;
* Workshops to assist librarians to develop the skills of collecting data and stories to show how libraries are contributing to the UN SDGs;
* Assistance workshops facilitated by experts on different issues in the SDGs who can provide advice or research relating to advocacy, or support meetings with policymakers.

For countries who have participated in the IAP Regional Workshops, the proposal should go beyond the awareness-raising and advocacy activities that they have committed to plan and implement as part of their agreements signed with IFLA.

Who is eligible to apply?

IFLA invites all countries to apply. Applications submitted by library associations, national libraries, and public libraries sector representatives will be given preference. Activities that work across countries or a region are encouraged. Proposals including countries that haven’t participated in the IAP Regional Workshops will be given preference.

What are the deadlines?

* 3 March 2017 – Deadline for sending the proposals
* 21 April 2017 – Successful applicants will be notified
* 1 May 2017 to 31 July 2018 – Activities will be conducted by successful applicants
* Applicants will be expected to submit a final evaluation report within one month of the conclusion of their proposed activities but ultimately by 30 September 2018.
